Process Introduction

Known as the “Porcelain Capital of the World,” Jingdezhen has a ceramic tradition spanning over a thousand years. Its craftsmanship is celebrated for carefully refined clay, durable bodies, pure glazes, and the beauty of kiln-fired transformations. At This Ceramics, we inherit this legacy while adapting it to modern life, creating pieces that embody both artistry and utility.

Our artisans begin with Jingdezhen’s exclusive saggar clay, which is repeatedly washed and refined to ensure purity and strength. The forming process — whether wheel-throwing, hand-building, or trimming — demands exceptional skill and patience at every stage.

Next comes glazing, applied by hand to create natural flows and textures. During firing, the glaze interacts with heat and flame, producing subtle variations known as “kiln transformations.” These unpredictable results are the very soul of Jingdezhen porcelain, making each piece one of a kind.

Finally, the work is fired in gas kilns at 1300°C. The extreme heat not only strengthens the ceramic body and makes it highly heat-resistant, but also reveals glazes with a soft, translucent, and refined beauty. Each finished piece is a union of craftsmanship, fire, and time — a true testament to Jingdezhen’s enduring artistry.

Process

Jingdezhen, known as the “Porcelain Capital of the World,” has carried its ceramic tradition for over a thousand years. Its mastery lies in refined clay, strong bodies, luminous glazes, and the beauty of kiln-fired variations. At This Ceramics, we honor this heritage, with every piece crafted entirely by hand to preserve its uniqueness.

Crafting Steps

  1. Clay Selection — Using Jingdezhen’s exclusive saggar clay, repeatedly washed and settled to achieve purity and fine texture.

  2. Forming — Shaping by wheel-throwing or hand-building, then carefully trimming to refine proportions and details.

  3. Biscuit Firing — The first low-temperature firing to harden the body and prepare it for glazing.

  4. Glazing — Applied by hand, allowing natural flows and textures that give each piece depth and character.

  5. High-Temperature Firing — The final firing at 1300°C in gas kilns, where heat and flame interact with the glaze, creating subtle and unpredictable kiln transformations.

  6. Final Selection — Each piece is carefully inspected, leaving only those that embody the true spirit of craftsmanship and time.

Through these meticulous steps, and the natural dialogue between clay, glaze, and fire, every Jingdezhen ceramic emerges as a one-of-a-kind creation filled with authenticity and warmth.
